About
Rietfontein
Lodge & Safaris

Rietfontein Lodge & Safaris is a charming off-the-grid establishment situated along the valley of the spectacular Bamboes Mountain Range where the Vlekpoort River runs, 26km from Hofmeyr in the Eastern Cape. While offering stylish and comfortable accommodation, one can experience the warm hospitality and hearty country food that we have to offer. The landscape boasts abundant birdlife, scenery, and wildlife for those looking to get away for a weekend of relaxation or family get togethers.

KAROO WILDERNESS

Rietfontein Lodge and Safaris is situated on a farm comprising of 6500ha of lush Karoo veld. The area is completely Malaria and Bilharzia free.  The conservancy is comprised of four individual farms whereby the biodiversity of the veld ranges from lush sweet grasses and acacia trees to semi sour grass veld.  Over twenty species of antelope roam the veld ranging from the elusive klipspringer to springbuck, sable and giraffe who stand tall amongst the trees.  Rietfontein is ideally situated as a central point between Gauteng and the Western Cape and is easily accessible by maintained gravel road via the R391 or by air.  We have a privately maintained 800 metre runway as well as a hanger that sits no more than 100 metres from the lodge.

FARMING HERITAGE

The farm Rietfontein has been in the family for four generations where Merino sheep and cattle was the main focus of farming.  There is so much to be learnt from history, the stories and traditions that have shaped the way we farm today.  Today, Merino sheep, Brangus cattle, Boer-goats, Game and Hunting as well as Lucerne under pivots all contributes to the diverse farming operations we run today.

SUSTAINABLE ENERGY

Rietfontein is fortunate enough to be completely solar powered and have a back up generator. Being solar powered allows us to run the farming enterprise without interruptions and maintain productivity. It is also a huge advantage being able to offer a comfortable farm stay for guests where one does not have to worry about the load-shedding schedule at all.

UNLOCKING THE PAST

To touch on a bit of history. For those who are fascinated by fossils, the famous Hofmeyr Skull was discovered in 1952 along the channel bed of the Vlekpoort River not too far from Rietfontein. It is known to be one of only a few African specimens of early modern humans dated over 36 000 years of age to have been found.
